
“We propose to publish an editorial on August 16 on the dangers of the administration’s assault on the press and ask others to commit to publishing their own editorial on the same date,” The Boston Globe said in a pitch to other national newspapers.
“The dirty war on the free press must end.” The Boston Globe has been contacting newspaper editorial boards and proposing a “coordinated response to President Trump’s escalating rhetoric that the free press is an “enemy of the people.”
As of Saturday, The Boston Globe and CNN report that more than 100 publications have signed up for the editorial-writing initiative, and expected numbers to grow.
Instead of printing the same exact message, each publication will write its own editorial.
Journalists have noticed that Trump’s “attacks” on the media have increased in recent weeks, along with limits placed on journalists to ask questions. Some media critics have asked the White House Press Corps to engage in acts of solidarity. The upcoming coordinated editorials will be another example of unity in news media.
